Cheyenne Yu has been working with clay since 2017. He studies under Master Potter Lim Kim Hui at Ceramic House, a studio as renowned for its prolific generation of quality fuel-fired ceramic works as they are for their varied selection of glazes hand mixed personally by Mr Lim himself.

His passion took him to Taiwan too where he frequented every few months per year (pre-pandemic!) He met potters and artists, visited studios and galleries, fell in love and got drunk on local beers. They were influences that have played a part, one way or another, in his work--which he showcases as Beastly Objects on IG.

Description :
The Chawan (茶碗 in Japanese, and Chinese), or literally 'tea bowl', is the principle object in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. As its name suggests, it is used to prepare and consume tea with. There are different types of chawans and this that you'll be making using hand-building techniques is for matcha tea. 

Of course, to limit its use to drinking matcha would be, especially in the Singapore context, a waste of good solid ceramics! Given its size and form, the bowl is perfect to have local desserts like red/ green bean soup, cheng tng, gulab jamun or even pulut hitam with. Cheyenne particularly love to use his chawan for glutinous rice balls!

Course structure – Introduction, Demonstration, Hands-on Work
Learning outcomes – Participants will be able to define the characteristics of chawans and the pottery production process, and eventually make one on their own with hand-building techniques taught. 

The final product that you'll get to take home measures in width between 8cm to 12cm, in height about 7cm, and weighs approximately 400 to 500g. 


** Please note that all items will be fired off-site and ready for collection 4 weeks after the session via the following methods: 

1. Self-collection: Items will be available for self-collection from The Refinery Workspace. Collection date to be notified and arranged once the pieces are ready. 

2. Delivery: Delivery of items to a location of your choice can be arranged for an additional fee of $10. This can be arranged during the workshop and paid for via Cash or PayNow.

All materials will be provided and no experience is necessary.

A refund of 50% of the workshop fee will be issued for all the cancellations made in writing and received less than 7 days prior to the workshop date. 

Cancellation for your slot for this workshop due to any COVID-19 related reasons would only be allowed full refund at our own discretion on a case-by-case basis.

No refunds or credits will be issued for No Shows on the day of the workshop.
